I got a message on facebook...
It was someone I didn't know, but the excitement was contagious. It pretty much said, "We decided to get married in a few hours, can you come and meet us right after and take pictures of us to celebrate our day?!"
Side note: our local courthouses do not let anyone in with cameras, phones, or any electronics- so there's no way I could have been in the courthouse with them.
I happened to be free that afternoon, so I said, "Sure! Why not? I'll be there."
I sent over a contract and invoice, popped my camera batteries on to charge, and got ready to go.
As fate would have it...
of course it was threatening to rain. If you live in Hampton Roads or the Tidewater area of Virginia, you know how funky the weather can be. It was a blazing hot July day and the dark clouds started rolling in and the temp started dropping. It felt so good, but I knew it couldn't be good.
I met them at the Ferry Terminal in Portsmouth and snapped away as we waited for our turn on the ferry. They were so excited, so were the kids. Everyone was all smiles and riding the high of having just been declared legally wed.
We hopped on the ferry (which the kids thought was a grand adventure!) and headed to Waterside District in Norfolk for some ice cream and sight-seeing.
Of course the bottom fell out of the sky over a wonderful dish of ice cream...
I mean, truly. It poured. Like a soul drenching downpour of rains.
But don't they say if it rains on your wedding day it's supposed to be good luck?
A mad dash back to the ferry, soaking wet, and laughing like crazy.
